How to photograph a work of art

Do you want to shoot your own artwork and don't know how to do it? We have some basic tips for you on how to get a good quality photo of your painting or other artwork. The basics are properly chosen lighting and a properly set up camera, nowadays even a very decent so-called smart phone.

1. How to do it - well, reproduction photography is a separate field with its own specialists etc. So we are talking about not an expert, but - let's say - a home practical way of reproduction. We expect that the result will have certain limits.

2. Lighting - it is necessary that the light falling on the image is diffused, i.e. evenly distributed. If you don't own good studio lighting, you can shoot the image outdoors. The lighting needs to be absolutely uniform and therefore we may recommend shooting somewhere behind the house, with diffused daylight - i.e. in the shade, not in direct sunlight. It is a good idea to line the bottom of the picture with a white surface to reflect the light from above. With oil paintings in particular, there is a reflection of the light source from the glossy surface of the canvas, which then makes it difficult to photograph the work. This brings us to the next point and that is the direction of the light.

3. Light direction - especially in artificial lighting, position the light source so that the light is not reflected back into the camera lens. Outdoors, don't shoot in direct sunlight, but rather in the shade. A partly cloudy day with diffused light is preferable.

4. Setting up the camera - place the camera on a tripod or other sturdy base, turn off the flash, set ISO 100, white balance to about 5000K, set the RAW format for further possible editing in photoshop. The same rules generally apply for shooting with a quality cell phone camera, you just don't set ISO and white balance with it.

5. Editing - when taking a photo, you don't need to zoom in on the subject too much. Cropping out unwanted surroundings can be done afterwards in the editor. If you want to achieve maximum resolution, shoot the image in several parts that can be joined together later in the editor.
