Jana Žany Bierhanzlová

Jana is a guitarist by profession and has been playing with her husband Petr since 1975, when they formed the Czech Guitar Duo while studying at the Prague Conservatory. "My grandfather, Antonín Dvořák, actually brought me to painting and music.He shared not only his name but also his love of music with the famous composer.He played the violin and, like the master, he loved Příbramsko, where he came from.My earliest memory is of sitting at the table with my grandfather and drawing illustrations in an old notebook for the stories we used to make up together," says Jana. The fantasy that was fostered in her childhood did not fully develop until years later. The hectic life of a professional musician and family consumed all her time. However, the desire to create something tangible never left the author. "At home, I often talked about my desire to paint, until one day my husband made me a painting easel for the holidays, then there was no stopping it! The ideas came in waves, more or less spaced apart, but I was always completely absorbed and often spent many hours at the easel at a stretch to get the most out of the painting, impatient, curious to see the result. Colours and shapes - these are the two main quantities, so different and inspiring from music, it is a breathtaking adventure of silence, an intimate touch of the eye and the soul. Painting is for me the counterpart to the musical profession, it is another track on which my thoughts take off, it provides me with energy for further activity". Jana signs her paintings with the nickname "Žany", which comes from her school years.
