After studying journalism, Jiří Papoušek (*born in the 1960s) has spent his entire life straddling the boundary between words and images. Journalism remained more of a theoretical hobby, while visual art became a permanent refuge—a place of relaxation, self-expression, and the joy of craftsmanship. In the early 1990s, he exhibited collages alongside Naďa Komendová, but over time he replaced them with oil paintings and acrylics on hardboard. His first solo exhibition, “Do We Go Well Together, Darling?”, took place at the Mimo Gallery in Karlín in 1998 and featured a series of double portraits. Since then, he has devoted himself primarily to painting; he keeps photography as a private hobby. His work is characterized by a poetic atmosphere, subtle humor, and often unexpected scenes from everyday life, nature, or human relationships. Typical themes include intimate portraits, landscapes viewed from above, and playful scenes with a touch of naivety. Technically, he prefers classical oil and acrylic painting, occasionally combined with small-scale experiments. Major solo exhibitions:• Chodovská tvrz Gallery, Prague 4 (2015)• Průhonice Castle, an extensive retrospective featuring nearly 50 paintings (2020) He gained international recognition in 2004, when, at an exhibition of naïve artists at the prestigious Swiss gallery Pro Arte Kasper, he won the Georges Kasper Special Prize “Three Golden Suns” for the painting “Nervous Dog, Cautious Master.” Jiří Papoušek lives and works in Prague, and he also devotes some of his energy to building dry stone walls at his cottage. He is delighted by everyone who stops to look at his paintings and finds something of their own in them.
