How to Ship an Artwork Properly – A Complete Guide to Safe Transport

Shipping works of art such as paintings, sculptures or ceramics can be challenging, especially when the item is valuable or fragile. The essential first step is careful packaging and choosing the right carrier to ensure your artwork arrives safe and sound.

1. How to Do It – Choosing a Carrier

For safe and reliable transport of artworks, we recommend trusted companies such as Česká pošta, PPL, GLS, DHL, UPS or DPD. Česká pošta is an excellent choice, as it offers insured next-day delivery of artworks, with cover for any damage that may occur.

2. How to Pack an Artwork Properly

Thorough packaging is the key to success. We recommend packing smaller paintings or prints (up to 25x35 cm) between two pieces of cardboard with an overlap of at least 2 cm. Use bubble wrap and seal the envelope firmly. For larger paintings and sculptures, it is better to use rigid cardboard and plenty of padding, such as foam or bubble wrap. For ceramic or fragile items, it is essential to use new double-walled cardboard boxes.

3. Shipping Cost and Insurance

Shipping prices vary according to size and weight. For example, a parcel of up to 50 cm (M) with insurance of up to 5000 Kč costs around 259 Kč. A parcel larger than 100 cm (XL) with insurance of up to 30000 Kč will cost approximately 459 Kč. For more information, please visit the carrier's website.

4. Inspection upon Receipt

When an artwork arrives at Original Gallery, we take care to receive the parcel properly and inspect it thoroughly. In the event of any damage, we will inform you immediately and refuse the parcel so that no claim arises.
