The thought occurred to me as I stood by the lake, where swans were circling on the water’s surface. Nature and its tenderness, nature and its terror. Perhaps Immanuel Kant would understand me; he claimed that people subconsciously seek out places and situations where they can realize their own insignificance. And so I go to the water, because I can’t swim. Everything I carry inside me can be destroyed if nature so decides. My heart, liver, lungs, intestines—even my brain. None of it was given to me, so none of it belongs to me. 30x30
