Description

This butterfly was not created through drawing, but through carving. Two hundred years of acacia wood have come together to form wings; the growth rings hold a shape that the tree itself did not plan. The butterfly is about time that can be hung on a wall: growth, pressure, stillness, and then, suddenly, flight. The viewer is meant to feel both the weight of the wood and the lightness of the image that has emerged from it.

Acacia, approx. 200 years old; wood and metal strips. A wood cut in the shape of a butterfly. Natural object / assemblage; wood as a sculptural form.
