Description

A mixed-media technique featuring layered and impasto applications of paint, textural elements, and striking contrasts between colorful fragments and the black background.

The universe was not created by an explosion.

Only something that already exists can explode.

The painting captures an even older moment—the instant when possibilities began to become reality.

The black surface is not outer space. Space does not yet exist at this moment. It is a state prior to distance, prior to direction, and prior to time. The blue, turquoise, white, and purple structures are the first fragments of reality that are beginning to coalesce from an indeterminate field of possibilities into a single universe.

First, relationships emerge.

Then, laws.

Only finally, matter.

Each colored trail represents a single possibility for the future arrangement of reality. Some will vanish even before time comes into being. Others will merge to form the laws of physics, according to which—billions of years later—stars, planets, life, and the first intelligent civilizations will emerge.

Much later, the heroes will discover that there was more than one such birth.

What their civilization called the universe is merely one of many realized possibilities. Beyond its boundaries lies not a void, but other realities, with different laws, different matter, and sometimes even a different meaning of existence.

And somewhere even further away, there exists something from which all of them may arise.

The Extra-Universe.
