The work captures a shaman woman from African culture performing a mysterious and ancient ritual. Although she is blind in one eye, perhaps she sees more than we do. The painting was the ultimate challenge in chiaroscuro with watercolour – to create a dramatic contrast between the intense light of the fire and the deep, velvety darkness.
