Lukáš Urban
Česká republika 🇨🇿
Lukáš Urban is a Czech visual artist, educator, researcher, and athlete whose work straddles the boundaries of reality, symbolism, and fantasy. In his paintings, he weaves together personal stories, psychological depth, and imagination into a unique visual language that invites viewers to interpret his work for themselves. He is also known to the public as a contestant on the reality TV show *Survivor Czech Republic & Slovakia*, which became a significant milestone in both his personal life and his subsequent artistic career.
Return to Art
Although he had previously been involved in the visual arts and presented his first original series, *Figurines*, in 2009, his professional path subsequently took him primarily in the directions of education, science, and sports.
A major turning point came only after his participation in the Survivor Czech Republic & Slovakia competition in 2022. This intense life experience served as the impetus for his return to painting and simultaneously launched a new phase of his artistic career. Over the following years, he began systematically developing his own artistic style and creating original collections that reflect his personal transformation and his view of the world.
In 2024, he presented the series *Zrození lva* (*The Birth of the Lion*), created two years after his return from the competition. The collection explores themes of courage, identity, personal transformation, and pushing one’s own boundaries. A year later, he followed this with the series “Fantastic Worlds,” in which he expanded his work to include imaginative motifs and symbolic stories that bridge reality and fantasy.
In addition to his signature collections, he also creates paintings for private commissions. His works were first exhibited at regional shows in cafés and cultural venues, from where they gradually made their way to prestigious galleries in Prague. He is currently preparing another solo project that will mark a new phase in his artistic career.
Artistic Style
Lukáš Urban’s work is characterized by the fusion of realistic painting with an abstract compositional structure. The artist refers to this distinctive approach as “abstract pseudo-realism.” Realistic details serve as a starting point for symbolic narratives that leave room for each viewer’s own imagination.
In addition to this approach, he is also developing two original artistic directions.
“Humanimal” explores the connection between humans and animals as symbolic archetypes. Here, animals are not merely motifs but embody human traits, emotions, and life stories.
“Urbanatura” merges the urban environment with the wild natural world into a single shared universe. Architecture and natural motifs create new connections here and raise questions about humanity’s relationship to both civilization and nature.
Art as a Story
Each of Lukáš Urban’s paintings is created as an original work with its own story. He draws inspiration from personal experiences, nature, human psychology, and the imagination. His paintings do not seek to offer definitive answers. On the contrary, they invite the viewer to pause for a moment, seek their own meanings, and form a personal connection with the work.
Each collection represents a new chapter in his life. Together, they paint a picture of an artist who is not afraid to explore new paths, push the boundaries of his own work, and continually develop his artistic language.
The Present
Today, Lukáš Urban devotes himself fully to his own artistic practice, preparing new original collections, fulfilling private commissions, and exhibiting his works in Prague galleries. His goal is to create paintings with lasting artistic and collectible value—works that evoke emotion in viewers, raise questions, and pass on their story across generations.
