A simple question that can have a different answer each time.

Alice Valkárová’s painting *Where From and Where To* depicts the city as a labyrinthine space of paths, buildings, staircases, and various directions. A single figure walks in the center of the composition. She is small compared to the architecture surrounding her, and this creates an interesting sensation: a person is part of a vast world in which she must find her own path.

The artist employs a distinct geometric style here. The buildings are broken down into a multitude of simple shapes, lines, windows, staircases, and colored surfaces. The whole piece evokes a city viewed simultaneously from several different perspectives. It is not an exact representation of a specific place, but rather an artistic conception of urban space and human movement within it.

Color plays a prominent role. White and light gray form the basis of the composition, while yellow and blue bring energy and rhythm. Black lines clearly separate the individual architectural elements and give the image graphic strength. The yellow evokes lights in windows, sunbeams, or colorful facades, while the blue areas provide contrast and a sense of space.

Another interesting element is the yellow moon at the top of the painting. Hovering above the geometric city, it serves as a fixed point in an ever-changing world. The figure at the bottom, on the other hand, continues on their way. The viewer can thus perceive the painting not only as an urban scene but also as a metaphor for decision-making, the search for direction, and life’s journey.

The composition is full of details worth revisiting. Staircases lead in various directions, streets fan out, and individual buildings form an almost labyrinthine pattern. The longer we look at the painting, the more we notice the individual paths and places one might set out for.

It fits perfectly into a modern interior—a study, an office, or a space with a minimalist or contemporary design. Thanks to its striking geometric composition, it can serve as a dominant wall feature, yet it also offers enough detail for repeated exploration.

It is a work for someone who appreciates modern urban motifs, architecture, geometric shapes, and thought-provoking art. It doesn’t tell the viewer which path to choose. It simply asks.
