I lived in Malta for three months. I really grew to love the town of Sliema, which offered a view of Valletta. Two days before my flight, my friends and I went to a rocky beach and gazed out at the horizon. We didn’t go swimming—it was November and pretty cold. But there was a sailing lesson (or something like that) taking place on the water. The little boats were circling around, trying to stay afloat; sometimes they capsized, other times they sailed quite crookedly. I couldn’t take my eyes off them. It occurred to me that they looked exactly like butterflies.
