Johnny Cash, born J. R. Cash (February 26, 1932, Kingsland, Arkansas – September 12, 2003, Nashville), was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was best known for his country music, but his versatility allowed him to explore other genres as well. According to many music critics, he became one of the most significant American singers of the twentieth century. He was well known not only for his black clothing and his modest greeting at the start of his concerts—“Hello, I’m Johnny Cash…”—but also as the recipient of numerous awards. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and became the youngest artist to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
