Description

A collage on a wooden panel with an original underpainting. Fragments and organic shapes are first painted with acrylics and then finished with pastels; the background is black, white, or bronze. The composition takes shape as the pieces are glued together, and chance plays a part in the final result. The painting is titled Briseis. In the *Iliad*, she is a woman from Lyrnessus who falls to Achilles after the city’s fall. When Agamemnon takes her away, Achilles refuses to fight any further. The layered collage alludes to this conflict, not to a literal depiction of the scene.
