What is or what is art?

Dear readers,

Today I have asked myself a simple question that has been hotly debated endlessly in the circles of so-called experts. I will try to make light of it and, let's say, lightly and mainly tolerantly describe the flow of my thoughts in a hopefully coherent text.

The definition and evolution of art is a complex subject. Historical definitions of art have varied depending on culture and time period. For example, in ancient Greece, art was considered a form of imitation or representation of reality. However, modern interpretations of art have expanded to encompass a wider range of creative expressions, including abstract and conceptual works. American philosopher Jerrold Levinson has written extensively on the philosophical problems of music and art, arguing that the definition of art is not only a matter of defining the subject of interest, but also the competence of those who engage in it.

Contemporary debates about what constitutes art continue to evolve as new forms of expression emerge. Some argue that art must have a specific aesthetic quality, while others believe that art should be defined by its social or political impact. For example, some indigenous creations were not considered art until the late 19th century because they were considered objects of common use or ritual. However, contemporary artists like Tomas Rafa use their work as a means to open up social debates and challenge traditional definitions of art. The democratization of art has also played a role in broadening the definition of art and making artworks accessible to a greater number and diversity of people.

With the increasing diversity of artistic expression, some have argued that many things that are now considered art are not actually art at all. However, the role of art in society continues to evolve, with some artists using their work as a means to guide the public through the world of contemporary art. The definition of art is ultimately subjective and open to interpretation. By rejecting the idea that the purpose of art's existence is the various subjective interpretations of it, we can break down the entire structure of the contemporary art paradigm.

Conclusion? In my opinion, the purpose of art should be, above all, to enrich human existence on the one hand and to express the artist's life attitude, world view or opinion on the other.
