Artists sometimes value their work so little that there is no interest in it, says the gallerist.

Art has been available to buy online in the Czech Republic for many years. There are online auctions and virtual gallery platforms such as Young Real Art, Artpit and Online Gallery, which is the brainchild of Marcel Sítník.

In describing the online gallery, Sítník and his colleagues refer to a well-known story connected with the personality of of the painter Jan Zrzavý to show why it makes sense to invest in unknown or inexperienced artists. Zrzavý, when he was young, poor and unstudied, paid innkeepers and dispatchers for paintings instead of money, which unknowingly ensured a decent inheritance for their descendants.

"We are trying to make people realise that art is available to anyone. That it's not a question of big money and that it's not even a question of whether the artist is Kupka, Zrzavý or Lada... That it's about one's own opinion, character and beauty. Everyone knows the Mona Lisa, but no one can have her on their wall unless they buy a poster. Whereas an original work that one likes personally and evokes a feeling of beauty and satisfaction, yes. Moreover, for normal money," explains the head of the gallery his concept. The works sold most often range between ten and forty thousand crowns, with the price set by the artists themselves.

"I can talk to them about the price, but I always say that it's ultimately up to them. It's about how much they value themselves, how much energy it costs them," he explains. "Some artists will even set the price so low that people don't actually want to buy it because they find it embarrassing to give such a small amount for such a work," he points out.

The works that Online Gallery offers go through Sítník's screening process. "But that's only to make sure that someone doesn't give us images that are inappropriate, violent or even pornographic. To date, we count about 100 rejected works," he explains.

Anyone can create

"I am of the opinion that everyone can paint, photograph, sculpt, just create. If one wants to, one can learn, even if one doesn't have the talent, and as an example I give many painting and drawing courses where I also suI have been several times and have been convinced of my hypothesis," answers Sítník when asked who can be an artist nowadays. Apart from Zrzavý, he gives the example of Josef Lada, who "was self-taught and yet was given the title of national artist".

For the time being, buyers at the Online Gallery are most interested in painting and drawing. There is less interest in photography, sculpture and sculptures. Favourite artists are Ivana Pelouchová, Dagmar Piorecká and Ljuba Ananina, while Joe Pisttone, Eugene Ivanov and Pavel Filin are the leading artists. "But that's really sort of my selection, very narrowed down," Sítník points out. He also names Jane Cores or Monika Korpak among the young talents.

Currently, Online Gallery has a painting by Josef Lada on its auction portal. According to Sítník, this is an exception, as he is a well-known artist, but his life story fits into the concept. "I think of it as a promotion of the emerging online auction portal. We don't want to cram ourselves in with the big auction houses with big works, no way," he says. The painting Children in Winter will be up for auction until 20 September and its starting price is CZK 800,000.
