Time is not a straight line.
At least not for everyone.
The image depicts the River of Time, a region of the universe in which individual causal streams have become so distinct that certain forms of intelligence can perceive them much as a person sees a river in the landscape.
The long parallel lines represent different possible courses of the same reality. For the most part, they flow alongside one another without ever meeting. In some places, however, they draw closer, bend, and for a brief moment may merge into a single current.
It is here that the heroes come to understand that the past need not be something that has disappeared forever.
Every decision leaves a trace. Every unfulfilled possibility can continue in a different direction. And some beings have learned to move between these currents.
They cannot change the past.
But they can find a past in which something happened differently.
For the heroes, this discovery is dangerously alluring. For the first time, the possibility opens up before them to find a world where their dead friends still live and the War of the Universes may never have begun.
All it would take is to leave their own stream.
But no one can answer a single question for them:
Once you step into another river of time, will you still be able to find your way back?
